A Kashmiri Bride’s Jewellery Checklist: What to Wear, Ceremony by Ceremony

In Kashmir, the wedding does not begin on the wedding day. It begins weeks earlier — with the henna-stained hands of maenz raat, the mehndi night — and carries on through the main ceremony and the celebrations that follow. Each evening asks something different of what you wear. Here is a simple, honest checklist for planning your jewellery, ceremony by ceremony.

First, decide what is real and what is for the night

Families often keep inherited gold for the ceremony itself and wear lighter, beautiful alternatives for the many other events. That is where imitation jewellery earns its place: a Jadau-style set for the photographs, a pair of American Diamond earrings for the dinner, a delicate pendant for the morning after. At Maenzraat everything is imitation jewellery — we do not sell solid gold or natural diamond pieces — and we would rather you know that before you choose.

Maenz raat — the mehndi night

This is the evening of music, laughter and colour. Hands are the focus, so keep the neckline simple and let the earrings and bangles carry the look. Bright Jadau-style pieces in rubies and emerald tones sit beautifully against henna and bright fabric.

The main ceremony

This is the evening for the full look. Kashmiri bridal styling is known for its layered head and ear ornaments — a jhoomar and passa on the side of the head, and, in Kashmiri Pandit tradition, the long dejhoor worn through the ear piercings. Build the look from the top down, then balance it.

The rule that never fails: one hero, two supporting pieces, everything else quiet.

The reception and the days after

By now the heavy pieces have done their work. Switch to lighter, sparkling pieces — American Diamond studs, a pendant set, slim bangles — that photograph well and feel easy at the end of a long evening. This is also when mix-and-match works best.

A practical checklist
