Anti-tarnish jewellery, explained without the jargon.

What it is, what it is not, and whether it is worth it for the way you actually live.

"Anti-tarnish" is the most-searched phrase in fashion jewellery right now, and also the most loosely used. Here is what it really means, so you can tell a genuine claim from a sticker on a box.

Why ordinary imitation jewellery tarnishes

Most imitation jewellery is a base metal — brass or a zinc alloy — with a very thin layer of gold colour electroplated on top. That layer is measured in fractions of a micron. Sweat, perfume, hand sanitiser and humid air all work on it, and once it wears through at a contact point, the base metal underneath oxidises and goes dark. That is the tarnish you have seen on a favourite pair of earrings after one wedding season. It is not a defect; it is just what thin plating does.

What "anti-tarnish" actually means

Done properly, it means two things working together. The base is 316L stainless steel instead of brass — the same grade used for surgical tools and marine fittings, chosen because it does not rust or react with skin. And the colour is applied by PVD plating instead of electroplating. If a piece is described as anti-tarnish but is still brass underneath with a normal gold plate, it will still tarnish; it will just take slightly longer.

PVD plating, in one paragraph

PVD stands for physical vapour deposition. Instead of dipping the piece in a chemical bath, the metal coating is vaporised in a vacuum chamber and bonded onto the steel at a molecular level. The result is a finish that is many times thicker and dramatically harder than electroplating, and that is fused to the surface rather than sitting on it. It is the same technology used on watch cases and premium kitchen taps — things that get handled and wet every day for years.

Why 316L steel matters for your skin

Green marks and itchy ears from fashion jewellery are usually a reaction to nickel and copper leaching out of a brass base. 316L stainless steel holds its nickel tightly in the alloy, so very little reaches your skin. For people who have given up on imitation earrings altogether, steel-based pieces are often the first ones that work.

Can it get wet, honestly?

Yes — this is the whole point. Hand-washing, rain, sweat through a summer wedding, a shower you forgot to take it off for: a PVD-on-steel piece shrugs these off. Where we would still be careful is chlorinated pools and hot tubs, because chlorine is aggressive on any finish given enough time. Rinse it in plain water afterwards and dry it, and you are fine. That is a far shorter list of rules than "take it off before you wash your hands", which is what ordinary plating asks of you.

How it compares to what we sell today

Our American Diamond, Jadau and Micro Gold Plated collections are traditional plated jewellery, and we say so plainly. They are made for occasions and for careful everyday wear, and they last well if you follow the care guide — perfume first, wipe after wearing, store dry. Anti-tarnish is a different promise: it is for the piece you never take off. Different tool for a different job.

Questions people ask us

Can anti-tarnish jewellery get wet?

Yes, far better than ordinary plated jewellery. A 316L steel base with PVD plating handles hand-washing, sweat and rain without dulling. We still suggest rinsing and drying it after a swimming pool, because chlorine is harsh on any finish over time.

How long does anti-tarnish jewellery last?

With basic care, years rather than months. Ordinary electroplating can wear through in a season of daily use; a PVD coating is bonded to the metal and is many times thicker and harder, so it keeps its colour through everyday wear.

Is anti-tarnish jewellery hypoallergenic?

316L stainless steel is the same grade used for surgical instruments and is very low in the nickel release that irritates sensitive ears. It is one of the safest bases for people who react to fashion jewellery, though no metal is guaranteed for everyone.
